Step 1 - Be
creative (or simply productive) and have something to record (anything...
John Cage recorded silence)
Step 2 - Record what
you have done. These days, there are schools and community projects
that have recording facilities - if, like me, you are an old-timer and
are told that these facilities are for young people, take a copy of
the age discrimination act with you - as these are mainly publicly funded
institutions, the management will soil their underwear and maybe even
give you preferential treatment!
There are lots of PC recording packages
that can produce very high quality audio (if you have a good enough
sound card). Some of the most popular in UK are Cubase, ProTools &
Logic - in USA, Cakewalk is more popular. This software can be very
expensive so some naughty (i.e. 'unwealthy') people download illegal,
pirate, cracked versions from sites like limewire.com.
Never, never do this - the people who make these programs
are clearly very poor and in need of the money, this is why they charge
so much for the software and the expensive security keys (that don't
work thus forcing owners of legitimate software to download pirated
copies that actually work!!). It is illegal to use pirated software.
Step 3 - Make some
copies of your stuff (make covers if you like) and sell it over the
internet, at gigs or anywhere you can. Remember, if you
sell it for more than it cost to make it, you are making a profit -
this is something major labels tend to avoid, otherwise they might actually
have to pay the artists. If you want to sell your CDs
on the Z Block shop or need more info on doing it yourself, just get
in touch.
Don't copy or sell anyone else's music
- it is a really shitty, exploitative, uncreative thing to do. Being
creative is rewarding and easy - just create something and, voila! You
are an artist! Get on with it!
